Thunder: Chapter 2.5

He sniffed the air, trying to remember the perfume that his mother wore, but failed. He looked away from the picture, and moved on to the kitchen. There stood Bonnie, the same as she always was, always cheerful, and smelled of hospital fresh rooms.

“‘Bout time you got in here”, she said with a chuckle, “Now hurry up, you’ll be late”.

Bonnie was a simple, old country woman, with her bright red hair, who was hired by Carrie who was to take care of Lance, when she couldn’t. Bonnie soon realized that she would have to take over Carrie’s job as a mother. And she did turn into a second mother to Lance.

He sat down without delay, and started to dig in to the fresh greasy bacon that he always liked for her to make. He looked at Bonnie. After everything that had happened over the years, she was always there for him. When his mom died, she could have left him on his own to defend himself. But no, she decided to stay with him. To feed him, cloth him, and take care of his other needs. He was grateful every day for her.

Only a few minutes after he sat down, he dropped his fork, and he wiped off the grease with his napkin. He picked up his bag, and keys, and started to head out the door.

“I’ll see ya Bonnie”, he said. And he went out the door as Bonnie was waving him goodbye.

Lance got out of his red 4-Runner, at the lower parking lot, and locked it. He headed up the stairs that lead to the school, with his laptop by his side.  He entered the library, and sat down at a table in the far corner. He turned his computer on, and entered the internet. Then he went into the city’s local newspaper’s website: The Canton Gazette

The site loaded up, and the headline news read: Drug Scam Taking over Canton. It was the same news as it was for the past 2 weeks. To him, some amateurs got lucky at selling drugs, and it turned into one big Drug scam. But people sure were scared about this news. Because if you were associated with that organization, and tried to get out, you were dead. And no matter how far you tried to flee, they always seemed to find them.

But Lance would find a way to stop it.

Katie Baxton walked into the library, carrying her bag next to her. She was holding her phone in her hand, texting. She sat next to Lance.

Katie was a gorgeous girl, slim, with brown hair that went below her shoulders, and hazel eyes. And skirts and dresses that she wore drew everybody’s attention. She was just like Lance. She was one of the popular kids, whether she wanted to or not. And she didn’t care about the phony friends that tried to act nice to her either.

She finally got Lance’s attention by the clicking of her phone.  “Who are you texting?” said Lance, still gazing at his computer.

“Don Preston,” she replied.

“How is that going?” he said, finally taking his gaze off of the computer. Don was now Katie’s latest fling. But she looked sour as she typed.

“It hit an end. I’m trying to let him down easy right now.”

“Why?” he questioned.

“Because,” she said, acting like he should have known, “he isn’t my type.”

“Then who is?” he asked.

She sighed, and then answered, “I don’t know.”

“Oh well,” Lance replied, “You’ll find him some day.”

“I sure hope so,” she said, and then she changed the subject. “So how is the news?”

Lance turned the computer so it was facing her. She read it, and then looked at Lance.  “We will catch them eventually,” she said.  Lance shushed her loudly. A few heads turned their way.  Apparently, he didn’t want anybody else to know what they did.

You see, Katie had a talent with computers, and with her talent she was able to hack into all of the networks in the city, and receive all info into the computer that was sitting in the bottom of Lance’s house. She liked to call hacking, connecting.

And with her god-given talent, she was able to access police records, and was informed of all activity. With Katie, and Lance’s knowledge of everything in the computer world, they were able to figure out all crime mysteries that left the police baffled.

They sent off their info, and work to the police anonymously, and with that info, the police were able to figure, and close most of the cases. Katie and Lance were the mysterious detectives working for the police. Though the police didn’t know it, yet.

Katie took the mouse on the computer and looked over the entire page of the site. She turned the computer back at Lance. “Looks like we made the front page also,” she said with a smile.  Lance took the computer and looked at the place where Katie had her finger on.

Unknown solves Crime

Unknown sources tell us that the police have more help than they asked for. For the past few weeks, police have received unknown tips to some of the most baffling cases. Nobody has taken the credit for this work. But police are not happy with this kind of help. Mayor Calwell had this comment to say:

“I am glad that we have solved some of the most confusing cases in the city. But I am not happy with the unknown help. It is unwise to rely on help that has no sources. And we will soon find the people behind this, for they are now a threat."

Lance frowned, and then looked at Katie. Katie thought that they would be bowing to them, and praising them for their help. He turned the computer around again, and let her read. She too frowned.  “How dare they!” she exclaimed, “They owe us! And yet they are trying to make us look like the bad guy!”

“Well it is hard to make a good reputation when you do all your work behind a computer.”

“But still,” she said, “They should be thanking us. I’ll show them!”

Lance laughed. “As long as you don’t expose us, I’ll be fine.

Lance took another look that the article that stirred so much into his mind. The bell to first period rang. Lance hurriedly packed up his computer. He soon followed Katie out of the door to their first class.
