Thunder: Chapter 5

Chapter 5- On The Docks

It was cold and foggy outside. They finally parked, and got out. All of the men got out, leaving Nosaj inside. Nosaj finally got out, making a grand appearance. The environment gave him a sudden chill. But he soon adjusted.

“Get the boxes out,” he growled. Then he walked toward the small ship, leaving the men to their work. He heard footsteps coming up from the bottom of the ship. His friend Johnny appeared. When he saw Nosaj, he waved. Nosaj returned the wave.

“A hoi,” Johnny yelled, welcoming his friend at last. He took a sip from his coffee mug. He waved him toward him, signaling him to come on the boat. Nosaj followed his wave. When Nosaj made it onto the boat, he shook Johnny’s hand gracefully.

“Johnny Yates!” Nosaj exclaimed,” How the hell are you?”

“Swell, swell,” he replied, taking a sip from his mug. “How about yourself?”

“So far so good,” he said laughing. His laugh actually took away some of the wrinkles left by the drugs. He even looked normal. He then turned around to look at the men working below him. “How are we?”

“We’re on schedule,” Johnny said. “If things goes well, we may actually get out of here early.”

“Let’s hope so,” Nosaj said. He took a cigarette from his pocket, and lit it. When he inhaled, he looked like he got a sudden pleasure from it. The smoke warmed his throat on the cold night.

The men continued to work. Already, the cold was making them cough and sneeze. But nothing stopped them from trying to get the job done.

The boat was surely used for cargo. Johnny was supervising them very carefully. Everybody knew that just by the look of him supervising them; he had never shipped drugs on his boat.

Johnny started to itch from the anxiety. If he was caught, it would ruin him, and his business. But he was willing to do it for his old friend. Besides, Johnny owed Nosaj a big favor, since Nosaj got him out of tight spots in the past.

After looking for a while, Nosaj walked near to Johnny. “Well Johnny,” he said, “It looks like this shipment is going to be a success.” He had a grin on his face. This clearly was the shipment that was to change his life.

“Yeah,” Johnny replied, “But I wouldn’t get your hopes up until we have this stuff loaded and unloaded.” On that thought, he took a sip of coffee from his mug.

Nosaj started to laugh. This just had to work out for him. If he got caught, then it was all over. And he could not afford for that to happen. If the cops traced all of the dealings that he had done, then he would more than likely get life in prison.

When Johnny left to supervise a very big box, Nosaj scooted next to where Johnny was just sitting, and took a sip of his coffee.

Johnny was able to direct the men to the right place to unload the very big box. Then he went to supervise another box. He had to supervise everything himself, so that nothing could be traced back to him.

Then he heard a loud, crashing sound. He tried to make out the object that fell. A trashcan, he thought. He started to shake with fear.

“Hey, hand me a flashlight,” he said to one of the men closest to the van. They obeyed and handed him one. He never thanked him, but instead, he started to head to where he heard the sound.

He walked over to the nearest building. It was a shipment storage room. Then he walked in a alley in between the nearest storage room, and the other one. He found the cause of the sound. It was indeed a trash can. But that was the least of his worries.

His main concern was what caused it to fall. Was it a cat? Or some other stray animal? He looked around. He saw smoke rising below him. He knelt down. And below his was a nearly burnt out cigarette. His fear took over his body. Somebody had been there. And they knew something was going on in the docks.

He ran back toward the docks. The men stared at him and looked puzzled as he ran past him. He finally stood beside Nosaj, barley out of breath.

“What’s wrong?” Nosaj asked, then laughed, “You look like you ran a track meet.”

Johnny changes the expression on his face, so that Nosaj knew that he was serious. “S-Somebody was h-here.” He pointed toward the buildings. “Some b-body knows.”

Nosaj’s grip on the boat rail tightened. His mission was now in jeopardy. He wanted to yell, and raise hell. But he knew he mustn’t do that. He had not been caught yet. Maybe the person that saw would not report it. But he couldn’t take a chance.

He stood tall above all of the others, and said boldly.

“Okay, listen up! Change of plans. Our plans may have been exposed. This means that the police could be here at any moment. And if we want to avoid any jail time, we need to get these boxes on the ship and sail out NOW! Now most bosses give you the opportunity to leave and hide, but I won’t. If you back out, and we do get caught, I will make sure that you will feel like jail time is nothing.” He gave a smirk. He saw the fear in the men below him. And he saw them progressing faster.

They didn’t have much time. He looked at his watch: 11:15. It was nearly Saturday. It was going to be a long night.
